Wings (Little Mix song)

"Wings" is a song by British girl group Little Mix. It was co-written by the group in collaboration with Iain James, Erika Nuri, Michelle Lewis, Mischke Butler, Heidi Rojas, Isaiah Lopez and the song's producers, TMS. It was released as their second single after winning the eighth series of ''The X Factor'' in 2011, and the lead single from their debut studio album ''DNA'' (2012). Syco Music serviced the single to BBC Radio 1 in the United Kingdom on 2 July 2012 and it was released for digital download on 24 August 2012. The uptempo song, which features modern beats, drums, horns and clapping, is a pop arrangement with elements of R&B and old school. Lyrically, the song has themes of girl power, maternal advice and individuality.
"Wings" was well received by contemporary music critics, who praised its lyrical message, upbeat sound and vocals. "Wings" was the group's most successful single to date, until they released Black Magic in 2015. It topped the UK Singles Chart with sales of 107,000 copies in its first week. The single also reached number one in Ireland and Scotland and number three in Australia, where it was certified triple platinum. It charted in the top 40 in three other countries, peaking at number 79 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 chart and number 26 on the US ''Billboard'' Pop Songs chart.
The accompanying music video was directed by Max and Dania at an abandoned warehouse. The clip shows the group dancing and singing in front of colourful backdrops and a pink Union Jack flag, wearing urban-styled outfits corresponding to the backdrops. The video received favorable reviews from critics, who praised the group's fashion sense, dancing and confidence. Little Mix promoted the song by performing it live on a number of television shows (including ''Red or Black?'' and ''The X Factor Australia'') and during their 2013 DNA Tour.
==Background==

After becoming the first group to win ''The X Factor'' in 2011 and having their first number-one single in the United Kingdom with their cover of Damien Rice's song "Cannonball", the group began recording "Wings" with the song's producers, TMS.〔 The recording was made while Little Mix were on the X Factor Tour in the United Kingdom. at the Music Shed in London.〔 In a January 2012 interview with British newspaper the ''Daily Mirror'', Perrie Edwards said "We're going a bit urban, old school with a bit of pop. We wanna bring back old school harmonies. And Jesy beat-boxes and Leigh-Anne raps, so we're trying out different things." On 9 March 2012, Little Mix met with Syco Music label owner Simon Cowell; Cowell was impressed with their progress,〔 saying it was the group's input that made the song good.〔 〕 The recording of "Wings" was described by Edwards: "It was just such a good time and a really cool experience to be able to go into the studio and have a laugh." According to her, the group knew on first listen that the song had to be a single. In writing "Wings", the group were inspired by Beyoncé Knowles and Michael Jackson.
Little Mix co-wrote "Wings" with TMS, Iain James, Erika Nuri, Michelle Lewis, Mischke Butler and Heidi Rojas;〔 the lyrics are based the group's experiences.〔 Most of the song was written by Little Mix, James and TMS. The writers collaborated on "Wings" until it felt as if the song was complete.〔 Leigh-Anne Pinnock told Brian Mansfield of ''USA Today'', "It had to feel right, so we kept adding to it."〔 It features backing vocals from Carmen Reece and James.〔 The song was mixed by Serban Ghenea at Virginia Beach, Virginia, and mastered by Tom Coyne.〔 "DNA" was engineered by John Hanes (with the assistance of Phil Seaford), and received additional programming from MNEK.〔 Simon Clarke, Tim Sanders and TMS were responsible for the track's instrumental arrangement, and performed its keyboard and saxophone tracks.〔 Kick Horns are credited for the song's brass, David Liddell for its trombone composition and Ryan Quigley and Darren Wiles for the song's trumpet section.〔 It was co-written by the group as a "feel-good" song, to which their listeners could relate without the song sounding cheesy. In an interview with ''Attitude'', Jesy Nelson said "There's nothing wrong with writing songs about clubs and parties but I think it's cool to do a song with meaning."〔 Speaking to MTV Australia, Jade Thirlwall said "We're really proud of (song ), and we hope people smile and dance when they listen to it." The group felt that the song was a good representation of its parent album, ''DNA'', and a "different style" for them.〔 More information about "Wings" was disclosed by Leigh-Anne Pinnock in an interview with BBC Online, where she explained the song as a re-enforcement of standing up to bullying:
Little Mix were the first ever X Factor UK winner to co-write their Second song, and Wings was the earliest release of an original song from an X Factor UK winner.
